Move the affected leg and the cane together, so that each side shares the load. To climb stairs, move your good leg first. Follow with your affected leg and cane simultaneously. When going down stairs, start with the cane, then put your weak leg forward, and follow with your good leg.
To walk safely with a cane on level surfaces: Hold the cane in the hand on your â€œgoodâ€ side so that it provides support to the opposite lower limb. Take a step with the â€œbadâ€ leg and bring the cane forward at the same time. Move the cane and affected leg forward together.
Canes are the lightest walking aid, and transfer weight to your wrist or forearm.. . For a common injury, the opposite side is OK, but for a bad knee, you want it .
